MG07 Conveyor – Chamber Design

Carborough Downs Coal Mine is an underground operation located in Central Queensland that utilises conveyors to transport mined coal to the surface for processing.  As operations progress and new longwall headings are mined, new conveyor installations are also required.  Designing a conveyor installation involves 3 major stages:  the drive-head chamber design, the civil design, and the mechanical arrangement design.

Prior to mining the longwall drive-head chamber, a chamber design must be developed to ensure that the chamber is adequately sized for the conveyor equipment installation, and that no more excavation is completed that required.  Orana Engineering was engaged by Carborough Downs to complete this chamber design, and provide a drawing set detailing the required drive-head chamber dimensions to suit the conveyor equipment installation, which was referenced by the site engineers during  mine development operations.

During initial mining of the drive-head chamber, it was discovered that the coal seam had a fault line through it that exceeded Carborough Down’s ability to mine through.  Carborough Downs requested that Orana Engineering develop a drive-head chamber design to maximise the product mined through the fault area while working within the conveyor installation constraints.  Using AutoCAD, Orana Engineering produced several options for the chamber design that met the client’s requests.  Orana Engineering was also able to produce sketches of the various options for the client’s approval and use as reference material during the mining process.

Upon client approval of the final design, Orana Engineering provided final chamber excavation drawings, which were developed into mine designs and sequence plans, by the site mining engineers.
